Note:
A typed index card on verso reads, "Isaac Heston was born in Bucks County on October 30, 1746. He and his brother, Thomas, were engaged in the plumbing business in Philadelphia before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. During the war, he served as a member of the Silk Stocking Company [a group of Free Quakers]. He later served in the Pennsylvania Legislature. According to family tradition, this is a self portrait."
In addition to plumbing, Heston, advertised his artistic services, "Painting performed by Isaac Heston in the neatest Manner, viz, Coach, Chaise, Chair, Sign, or any kind of Landscape Painting...", The Pennsylvania Chronicle, June 27-July 4, 1768, Vol II, issue 23, pg. 184.
the frame is applied to board directly for integral presentation- frame appears to be original with some expected loss to paint commensurate with age; the panel with old crack running from the top edge, stopping about midway; panel slightly bowed forward; the panel board with some darkened visible lines from either wood grain or saw marks, confined mostly to upper half above and on head / face; a few knicks and scratches; a few spots of visible retouching to upper right quadrant; UV light reveals general green fluorescence, indicative of later applied varnish
