Provenance:
Eliza Gracie King (1790-1825), thence by descent to her daughter, Eliza Gracie King Halsey (1810-1883), to her granddaughter, Eliza Gracie Halsey Suydam (1840-1901), to her great-granddaughter, Eliza Gracie Halsey Keys (1890-1981), sold to a Mr. Scheiner
Bearing old Christie's tag
From the collection of O.D. Noble.
Note:
Eliza Gracie was the daughter of Archibald Gracie (1755-1829) and Esther Hetitia Rogers (1757-1833). Archibald was a successful New York merchant and ship owner. In 1798-1799, he built a large country home along the East River. This house, known today as the "Gracie Mansion," presently serves as the residence of the mayor of New York City.
On March 12, 1810, Eliza married Charles King (1789-1867), a prominent politician who served as the 9th president of Columbia College (now Columbia University). He was also a business partner of Eliza's father. This silver ladle may have been a wedding gift for Eliza, as it was likely made around the same date as their marriage.
This lot is accompanied by a file containing provenance and supporting documentation, including a handwritten letter by Eliza Gracie Halsey Keys, dated February 4th, 1965.
