Associate Vice President, Specialist, American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts
Provenance:
From the collection of O.D. Noble.
Note:
It is suggested that these spoons were made for John M. de la Montagne. He was the son of Abraham and Mary de la Montagne.
Abraham was owner of Montagne's Tavern, a New York City venue located on Broadway, and originally owned by Edward Bardin. The tavern served as a meeting site for the Sons of Liberty during the Revolutionary War. The Liberty Pole which stood outside was eventually destroyed by British troops in 1770, but Montagne's Tavern continued to serve as a symbol of resistance to British control.
