appears to be painted paper mounted to board, the surface with some scattered areas of rippling, including around head and along bottom and edges; the surface with cracquelure, and with scattered small flaked losses most visible to neck, coat, and throughout body; some general darkening commensurate with age, with some stains including a darker streak above head; possibly with later varnish, showing some darkened accumulation; with several areas of retouching revealed under UV light, including to body and garment, two areas of retouch apparently done over tears or losses, with one small tear to left of face and the other tear / loss to lower left corner of coat; an angular scratch with tear across left foot / bottom edge; the frame appears to be old, and retains old backboards that have some expected losses commensurate with age
