Lot Essay:

Richard Anacréon (1907-1992), to whom the present drawing was dedicated, was a reputable bookseller and art collector. Born in Granville in Normandy, he quickly settled in Paris, where he opened a bookshop that soon became a meeting place for famous artists and writers such as Jean Cocteau, Colette, Guillaume Apollinaire, Maurice de Vlaminck, or Maurice Utrillo himself. In the 1980s, Anacréon decided to donate his large collection of first edition books and fine art to his hometown, where an eponymous museum has since opened.

Framed: 16 1/2 x 13 inches.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; sheet is hinged with Japanese tissue to backing board on upper right and left corners verso; moderate discoloration throughout, with heavier discoloration from previous tapes along all extreme edges; two areas of slightly lighter toning along the upper right and left corner edges, corresponding with the Japanese tissue hinges; one small repaired tear in the lower center edge, accompanied by discoloration from a tape repair; small brown stains scattered through the lower edge; one soft diagonal crease in the upper left corner, only visible under raking light.
