Estimate$5,000 – $7,000
Provenance:
Private Collection, New York
Framed: 40 3/4 x 52 3/4 inches.
Most of the unlined canvas is in original, unrestored condition. There is localized restoration to the painting at right, however. On the verso at lower right is a round, darkened area that is slightly hard to the touch and is likely some old glue residue. In and around this area and extending into much of the lower right quadrant of the canvas there is visible restoration under ultraviolet light. A 3/4 inch vertical abrasion at upper center. Areas of restoration under ultraviolet light include small retouching at seated figures legs in the open doorway; areas of the wall at right, including parts of the wall to left of desk, just above the floor; and areas of the wall at far right, extending into where paintings are hung, including, but not necessarily limited to some retouch to a portrait at right on the wall. There is also retouch along parts of right edge. In parts of the canvas there are minor, generally unobtrusive surface scratches and there are some minor losses along parts of outer edge of canvas at juncture of frame. The corresponding area on the front of the canvas at lower right where darkened area is visible on the verso does not appear to be torn or punctured. Additional images available upon request.
