This finely cast bronze statuette is likely based on a well-known Greek original from the 4th century B.C. The design became widely admired in European art following the discovery of a Roman copy in Pompeii in 1862, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum, Naples. Although numerous replicas were created during the Grand Tour era, authentic ancient examples of this quality, style, and scale remain rare, with only a handful of known surviving pieces. Some heavy oxidation with cuprite and olive patina. Signs of possible early bronze disease at bottom of proper right leg. Overall in good and attractive condition. See additional images. Height with stand 11 1/2 inches (29.21 cm).
