In this series, Matthew Brandt photographs lakes and reservoirs across the U.S. and then submerges each printed photograph in water collected from the body of water depicted. The prints are soaked for days, weeks, or even months, allowing the natural elements in the water—such as algae, sediment, and minerals—to interact with the photographic chemicals. This process causes the images to degrade, warp, and shift in unpredictable ways, creating abstract and often vibrant color distortions.
