This finely engraved scaraboid features a recumbent lion on its domed surface, an exceptionally rare motif documented in only twenty-seven known examples, while the intaglio depicts a seated, helmeted warrior resting upon his shield, spear in hand. The juxtaposition of these motifs evokes Homeric imagery, particularly the Iliad (12.292-293), where warriors are likened to lions poised for battle, exuding latent power and readiness for fate. Overall, the composition reflects broader Greek artistic and literary traditions that associate the lion with martial valor and heroic contemplation.

Inspected under UV light and 10x loupe. Mild chip to bottom edge. Some deposits, notably in right eye and neck of lion. Overall in very fine and attractive condition. Mounted on stand. Height with stand 3/4 inch (1.91 cm).
