Captain Michael A. Healy (1839 – 1904) is recognized as the first African-American to command a federal ship. From a prominent Georgia family, Captain Healy decided to become a career officer with what would become the United States Coast Guard. Following the Alaskan Purchase in 1867, Healy explored the 20,000 miles of coastline for 20 years. Nicknamed "Hell Roaring Mike," he ultimately gained respect from the Native Alaskan peoples and mariners alike. Author Jack London was inspired by Healy's adventures, and it is said that "The Sea-Wolf" is loosely based on Healy's adventures.
