Stuart, James Ewell Brown (1833-1864). Confederate cavalry corps commander mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 1, 1864. Partially printed DS, 1p, 15.5 x 9.75 in. September 30, 1859. Pay voucher of 1st Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart for the pay period September 1-30, 1859, during his service with the 1st US Cavalry. Stuart was to receive $137.83 for wages, clothing, forage, and subsistence for both himself and a "mulatto. . . private servant" identified as "Ben."
A graduate of West Point, Stuart was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the US Regiment of Mounted Riflemen in Texas. He was transferred to the the newly formed 1st Cavalry Regiment and promoted to first lieutenant in 1855. For the remainder of his service in the US Cavalry, Stuart was involved in several Indian frontier conflicts, including “Bleeding Kansas." In October of 1859, he would volunteer as Robert E. Lee's aide-de-camp on the campaign to capture John Brown at Harper's Ferry. Upon the secession of Virginia in 1861, however, Stuart resigned to join the Confederacy.
Brittleness and creasing, often with tearing along fold lines. Wear to edges and corners, with some staining a small area of loss a left near center.
