Estimate$800 – $1,200
Lot of 3 CDVs, each credited to J.B. Reiff, Council Grove, Kansas, ca 1868, featuring an outdoor view of a Kansa Indian family. Reiff had emigrated to Council Grove from Lavaca County, Texas, east of San Antonio, where he had a studio in 1866. The Kansa tribe were located on the Neosho Reservation near Council Grove, from 1847-1873, when they were removed to Indian Territory. The CDV likely shows the Agency grounds at Neosho, and appears to capture two brothers, each with his son, though it is possible the elder man might be father of the other three. Each has a wool blanket wrapped around his body. The two older men carry fans made from golden eagle forewings. The two at left display hand mirrors carried in carved wooden frames. The mirror frame resting on the ground has a feathered circle design of radial diamonds chip-carved on the back side. The young man at right grasps the quills of three peacock tail feathers. Accompanied by two views of Caucasian families taken in the same outdoor setting.
Even toning to each CDV, with few spots/stains on recto and verso.
