Lot of 2 cabinet cards, each with backmark of W.S. Soule, Fort Sill, Indian Territory. The first with period inscription on mount recto, "White Horse / Kiowa Chief / War Chf of Kiowas and a SOB." Identical inscription also penciled on verso. Accompanied by portrait of an "Arapahoe Chief," as identified on verso.
White Horse (Tsen-tainte) was probably with the Kiowa, led by Satanta and Lone Wolf, in December 1868, when they met Custer, Sheridan, and Sheridan's Adjutant Colonel J. Schuyler Crosby, and the 7th Cavalry near Fort Cobb, IT. Satanta and Lone Wolf were made prisoners and held until the Kiowas surrendered and came to Fort Cobb. Later, White Horse was involved in numerous raids into Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico from 1870-1874, including the infamous Warren Wagon Train Massacre on May 18, 1871, and he played a prominent role in the Battle of Adobe Walls on June 27, 1874. He surrendered and was taken as a prisoner to Fort Marion in 1875 and was returned to Indian Territory three years later, where he remained until his death in 1892.
