Wool with cotton canvas hoist, approx. 53.5 x 93 in. Originally with two brass grommets on hoist. Later four small steel hooks were sewn to hoist. The body was painted/dyed by hand, brush strokes are visible in the colors. The Virginia seal is hand painted on a 35 in. diameter white disk that is machine-stitched to the flag body showing a female Roman figure (Virtus /virtue) having conquered Tyranny, which lies on the ground, broken chain in one hand, whip in the other, crown on the ground above his head. Below is "Sic Semper Tyrannis" (Thus always to tyrants). The seal seems to be most like those of the last quarter of the 19th century (ca 1870s), before the various elements were standardized. The Virginia seal is the only state seal with nudity (one exposed breast) and one of only three that depicts a crown (in this case, fallen from the wearer's head).
Considerable mothing of the seal, not much in the body of the flag. Measurements are approx. and flag seems to be a bit asymmetrical, as it measures 92 in. at bottom and 94 in. at top.
