The unusual large water coupe inspired by a bronze “Yi”, with a stylized taotie head to one side as handle, the exterior carved in low relief with dragon and clouds, other side with Phoenix, rim embellished with fret motifs, very softly polished

Frederic Ossorio (Philippine/American 1919-2005), thence by descent
acquired from the daughter of the above by the present owner
Frederic Osorio, the brother of the artist Alfonso Ossorio, graduated from Yale University in 1942, and served with the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. In 1946, he served with the U.S. Allied Commission for Austria in the Property Control Branch of the Reparations, Deliveries and Restitutions Division. After the war he worked for family-related businesses. He and his wife were known collectors and donated works to the Smithsonian and Guggenheim Museums, as well as the Harvard Art Museums.

Overall generally good condition, typical signs of wear from age and use, a few scattered small flakes to extremities, particularly at foot and foot ring, scattered internal natural fissures, some with paler or russet tinge, a few scattered suffusions; possible slight polishing to lip.
