A rich and atmospheric scene, completed by Bodmer during the winter of 1833-34 at Fort Clark in the upper reaches of the Missouri River. The two hide-wrapped poles represent the sun and the moon, symbols for two of the most powerful Mandan deities, the Lord of Life (creator of all things) and the Old Woman Who Never Dies (associated with corn and buffalo). Before these figures stands a Mandan seeking guidance. From Bodmer's Travels in the Interior of North America.
