Sotheby's, London, sale of December 4, 1996, lot 368 (as dated ‘1896’).
Acquired directly from the above sale.
Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In overall good condition. With minor white scuffs at bottom left quadrant (easy to clean off) and a small loss in the board at bottom center, to the right of the signature. With an overall hazy aspect to the work, which is due to the technique (as the painting was thinned, we do notice washy, drippy areas intermittently). Examination under UV light reveals a very thick layer of old greenish varnish throughout, which complicates the review of the work. We notice several purplish areas, which may be old restoration (only a light clean would be able to confirm): see at at upper right (dot on her hair), as well as at center (pinpoint dots on her nose and nearby cheeks, and around her jaw). Clear evidence of restoration at center right: several streaks stretching diagonally from the right outer edge to the bottom center of the composition. Similar pattern visible at upper right corner. Some purplish mass also to be seen across the bottom left corner. The date of the work does fluoresce under UV light, which may indicate it was enhanced. See Specialist's pictures for more details.
