Schultz had originally intended his Petal tables to have a solid flat white appearance, and painted redwood was briefly considered as it came closest to providing both suitability for outdoor use and a generally fine grain amenable to painting. It was not until decades later that, through the use of solid composite materials, Schultz's original intention of solid white petals could be efficiently and uniformly realized.

Shea+Latone was a product design and development consultancy that helped clients develop innovative products for over 25 years before transitioning to becoming a furniture design licensing company. Since its inception in 1996, from two Knoll product development experts, Shea+Latone provided a broad range of design development services to the contract furniture market. Clientele ranged from major manufacturers such as Knoll, Teknion, and Humanscale to some of the world’s most progressive designers and architects. Shea+Latone engineered, prototyped, and tested some of the most iconic furniture designs all while upholding the aesthetic needs of their clients.
