Album of Pen and Ink Illustrations of Russian Dress, after J.G. Georgi
No place, (ca. second half 19th century or later). Oblong folio, 12 3/8 x 17 1/4 in. (314 x 438 mm). Comprising 100 drawings in pen and ink or pencil on translucent paper, mounted on 56 sheets; each with manuscript in Russian and German below image. Full black pebbled morocco, elaborately stamped in blind, corners and spine ends worn, boards rubbed and soiled; all edges trimmed; sheets toned; mounted paper variously creased.
A collection of pen and ink drawings of Russian dress, largely copied from Johann Gotlieb Georgi's Beschreibung aller Nationen des Russischen Reichs (1776-80), the first ethnographic study of Russia, commissioned by Catherine the Great.
