An 18th c original, made for the Society of Abolition of the Slave Trade, on order of Josiah Wedgwood, who was one of the three founders of the group. The cameo was modeled by William Hackwood after the seal of the society, showing a kneeling man in chains with the motto “Am I not a man and a brother?” molded into the ground of the medallion.
Along with a 1976 example made for the Buten Museum of Wedgwood, a 2007 example made to mark the bicentenary of the end of slavery in Britain, and a circa 2000 "Am I not a Woman and a Sister?” medallion
