The Art of Gathering

All with dog-nose or trefid terminal to handle and rattail to bowl backs, possibly bearing a thin layer of gold wash, each by a different unidentified maker: one spoon bearing pre-1680 lion rampant and crown leopard's head, another bearing rubbed maker's mark, another bearing partially obscured maker's mark, “IE” (?) and engraved with date “1692,” and the last example bearing post-1680 lion rampant and crowned leopard's head and rubbed maker's mark; displayed in an old custom retail box marked, “Hamilton & Inches/ 90 Princes Street/ Edinburgh,” and retaining old note inscribed, “4 ancient fruit spoons date from 1680-1692/ Belonged to Sir William Steuart (sic) of Murthly Castle, Perthshire, Scotland.”
