Of Neo-Grec form, on footed base, scrolled handle, the body with banded midsection above engraved foliate motifs, engraved, “Thomas L. Jenks/ Presented by the Democratic State Central Committee of Massachusetts in recognition of his long and faithful service as its Treasurer/ Boston January 2nd 1880,” marked to underside.

Thomas L. Jenks (1829-1899), born in New Hampshire, relocated to Boston for his professional life. He was first a medical doctor, graduating from Harvard, as well as the founder of a successful apothecary. This business was located at 132 Portland Street in a “wedge” shaped building that still stands today and is known as the Jenks Building. He was also very active in politics, serving in several positions across a few organizations. At his death, he donated funds to build a public library in Conway, New Hampshire, which survives today.
