Alice Kent Stoddard was predominately known for her portraits, landscapes, and seascapes. She lived and painted on Monhegan Island in Maine which played host to a colony of artists. Started in the mid-1800s and firmly established by 1890, the enclave artist’s on Monhegan included well-known painters such as Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows and three generations of the Wyeth family. Stoddard became well known for her painted portraits of Philadelphia socialites, often including pets in the paintings. During World War II, she worked as a combat artist and mechanical draftsperson for airplanes. Her formal arts education took place at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, after which she studied under William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anshutz and Cecilia Beaux at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She married late in life to Joseph Pearson, who had been a longtime friend and teacher at PAFA, The pair settled along the Pennypack Creek, in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. Many of her works, particularly portraits, are in public collections, including University of Pennsylvania's portrait collection and the Woodmere Art Museum.

Small dent, approximately ½ inch wide with associated puncture and loss present in upper left over flower pot. Under UV evidence of small cosmetic retouching present in upper center above head and at lower right corner. In generally good condition besides.
