In the twilight of his career, Bellows underwent a noticeable evolution in style and subject matter, transitioning from dynamic representations of urban life and sporting events to an exploration of the landscape. The present work depicts Woodstock, New York, where Bellows spent part of every year from 1920-1924. According to art historian, Bruce Weber, Woodstock offered Bellows the perfect complement of “nature and neighborhood.” The town's bucolic charm and supportive community fostered a fusion of Impressionist brushwork and an ambitious approach to color and light, showcasing the artist's versatility. The Woodstock landscapes reveal Bellows’ ability to translate the atmospheric nuances of the countryside onto canvas, all the while employing a higher-key palette to capture the interplay of light and shadow on architecture and environment. Landscape, Old Lady's Home, one of over 100 paintings Bellows created during this prolific four-year span, is indicative of a softer, more contemplative facet of his career.

The unlined canvas in excellent original condition with no sign of inpainting as seen under UV light. With minor fluorescence on the building at left, but we believe this is due to the pigments used by the artist. We also notice remnants of old greenish varnish throughout, shining inconsistently which reveals the work may have been selectively cleaned. See Specialist's pictures for more details.
