This present work was reproduced in The Century Magazine (Vol. 102, October, 1921, no. 6, p. 807) and served as the illustration for The Black Hand, a short story by Marjorie Pickthall (1883-1922), which followed the rescue of a young white man from a shipwreck, who was saved from a certain death by a black French sailor whose auspicious hand is seen emerging from the inky sea.

In overall fair to good condition. The blacks are shiny and present well. The sheet is affixed to the undermat at three corners (upper right, bottom left and right) via paper encasements in which the sheet's corners rest. The sheet is toned, with mat staining around the image. With some skinning to the sheet across the top edge and in the upper quadrants (all covered by the mat): most likely a result from old hinges and tapes that used to secure the sheet in its previous mat. Slight wrinkle in the sheet at bottom center right, along the right outer edge. Very faint creases from handling the work are visible in the bottom margin. The edges are not even, with some cut outs along the left outer edge. Minor surface soiling (spotted brown dots) in the bottom margin. We also notice soft scratching in the sheet on the man's exposed forehead and behind his neck, which appear to be part of the artist's working method.
