The present work relates to (and is likely a field sketch for) Sunset in the Foothills, one of Dunton's last important works. Larger versions of Sunset are privately held (see Bonhams sale of April 8, 2008, lot 176) and in the permanent collection of the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas. These sketches, typically small in scale, are among the most decorative and abstract of Dunton's late-career output.
