Relocating to Cape Ann permanently in 1922, Mulhaupt infused his frequently diminutive compositions with a unique blend of Impressionism and Realism, presenting picturesque views of the region’s rugged landscapes and bustling seaports. Color and light extol the atmospheric nuances of the region—as in the present work, Gray Day and Guinea Boats from 1924—while offering insight into the peninsula’s distinctive seasons and moods. Mulhaupt's Cape Ann scenes cast architecture, sea, and sky within an intimate visual narrative where elements of nature and culture coexist. Through confident brushwork and careful attention to detail, he immortalizes the environs in and around Gloucester Harbor—here, by way of a flotilla of guinea boats, monochromatic industrial and commercial architecture, and the figures who work and while away their time in the coastal village.

Very good to excellent condition overall. With some fluorescence as seen under UV light which in our opinion is the result of thinned out oil rather than restoration. See Specialist photos for details.
