Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jane Piper demonstrated an early interest in art and committed herself to pursuing a career in the field. She received her formal education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later studied privately with Arthur B. Carles and Hans Hofmann.

During the early years of her career, Piper primarily worked with representational subjects, primarily landscapes and botanical studies. However, her artistic style underwent a transformative shift in the late 1940s when she encountered the work of abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. Inspired by their innovative techniques, she began exploring new ways to express emotions and ideas through abstract forms, colors, and textures.

Piper's abstract works often reflected a strong connection to the natural world, capturing the essence and energy of landscapes and interior spaces, while simultaneously venturing into purely non-representational dimensions. Still Life with a Copy of Canova’s ‘Psyche Revived by Love's Kiss, 1793,’ No. 2 (1974) and her later Compote with Oranges (1990), both showcase her vibrant brushwork, bold colors, and dynamic sense of movement, which create a sense of depth and intensity in these compositions. The former was painted during a time when Piper was interested in drawing from the figure. In fact, she borrowed the Canova copy from a friend, who was an Antiques Dealer, and made two paintings and several charcoal drawings of the sculpture.

Throughout her career, Piper participated in numerous exhibitions across the United States, gaining recognition for her artistic contributions. Her work was shown in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In addition to her own artistic pursuits, Piper was also an influential educator and mentor, teaching at Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) and the New York Studio School. Her teaching philosophy aimed to encourage students to push artistic boundaries, experiment with new techniques, and find their own unique artistic voices.

Jane Piper's remarkable career spanned several decades, during which she made significant contributions to American art. Her innovative approach to abstract expressionism combined with her profound connection to nature continues to inspire and influence artists today. Through her paintings and teachings, Piper left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer in the world of abstract art.
