The composition of the present lot is similar to prints from a series of 24 works by Munakata created in 1945 on a Buddhist theme, titled Shôkei shô hangakan (Print volume in praise of Shôkei), a tribute to Munakata's friend and supporter in the Mingei folk art movement, Kawai Kanjirô, one of Japan's great twentieth-century potters. Kanjirô's kiln in Kyoto was called "Shôkei'"(Valley of the Bell).

Acquired by the present owner from a gallery in Kyoto, Japan, 1964
