Each topped by a full lotus blossom and central seedpod, supported by stylized floral and foliage-bracketed central column, all above a multi-tiered base of lotus petals and scroll-ornamented lotus petal lappets.
H: 23 1/4 in.
The form of the present stands accords most closely with porcelain and embellished bronze altar ornament stands made for the imperial court, where a full set of eight stands would support Buddhist symbols, such as those illustrated in "A Special Exhibition of Buddhist Gilt Votive Objects", National Palace Museum, Taibei, 1995, pp. 166-181. The present stands may also have originally been pricket candlesticks, such as the closely related gilt-lacquered pair sold at Bonham's, New York, March 21, 2022, lot 197.

Frank Hand arrived in San Francisco after serving in the United States military, eventually becoming an executive at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife). He retired in the 1970s and became an antiques dealer specializing in Asian arts. Mr. Hand acquired many works from his friend, the noted dealer and San Francisco cultural leader Chingwah Lee (1901-1980), local auction houses such as Butterfields, and directly from San Francisco and East Bay estates being dispersed in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a major benefactor to the San Francisco Asian arts museum, with several donated works including a rare pair of carved Indian armchairs designed by Lockwood de Forrest (accession #2011.58.1-.2).
Surface soiling; Gilding of one of a different tone than other, one very slightly taller than other, not readily evident; very slight differing of carved details, not readily evident, scattered chipping and some associated inpainting to extremities; one with a large section of lost petals to top lotus section; other with restored scrolls to one section of central supports; both with a central hole to top for an element, now lacking; scattered cracks and small losses. Wear to gilding.
