Note
The subject's position, with the inclusion of a chair arm, and the way the figure's arm is leaned and the hands are rendered, bears a strong resemblance to other documented works attributed to Sarah Miriam Peale, including the Portrait of James Searles Woodward (1790-1862) in the collection of Woodford Mansion, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. The original gilded wood and gesso frame is also identical to frames surrounding other portraits by Sarah, including the Portrait of William Jessop and Portrait of Mrs. Charles Jessop, both sold at Pook & Pook in Downingtown, Pennsylvania on May 13, 2006, lots 819 and 820.
