According to Charles Coleman Sellers, Portraits and Miniatures by Charles Willson Peale, supplement (1969), p. 129, text pg. 57-58, this portrait is a copy of the life portrait of Mrs. Cox that was a pendant to the portrait of her husband, John Cox, painted in 1792. The copy was made by Peale the following year. A portrait miniature by Charles Willson Peale of Esther Bowes Cox is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
