Baltimore, June 2, 1787. One sheet folded to make four pages, 14 x 18 in. (355 x 457 mm). Manuscript document, signed by Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland, Samuel Chase (1741-1811), attesting to the settlement of the last will and testament of Joseph Nicholson. Creasing from old folds, a few small separations along same; scattered foxing; a few large stains partially affecting signature. In mat and in frame with a portrait of Chase, 25 1/2 x 37 3/4 in. (647 x 958 mm).

Joseph Nicholson (1709-1787) was head of a prominent Maryland family who emigrated from England and settled near present-day Chestertown. In addition to being a vocal advocate for independence during the Revolution, and volunteering in the Maryland militia, Nicholson dedicated much of his time to advancing public education. He was one of the founders of the Kent Free School, the first institution of higher learning on Maryland's Eastern Shore, as well as Washington College in his hometown of Chestertown.
