Boeotian horses were primarily associated with the cult of Poseidon, whom they revered as their ancestor. Terracotta figurines such as the present example were crafted throughout Greece, but they were particularly popular in regions like Boeotia. Horses, both with and without riders, were cherished subjects for Boeotian artisans, with such figurines often placed as votive burial offerings in graves. During this period, horses also symbolized wealth, making these terracotta representations likely to reinforce the esteemed status of the deceased individual – as well as their association with the divine.
