Glazed earthenware
The observe decorated with a foliate border enclosing a feather-pattern border with compass points and a map of Dorset, centered on the area north of Dorchester, labeled "CHANTMARLE" (a Grade I listed Tudor house built by Joseph and Daniel Rowe of Hamdon, for Sir John Strode)
Impressed "WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND" marks, inscribed Alfred Powell's cipher and the number 2072 in blue

Note
Chantmarle was purchased in 1919 by Charles Harold St John Hornby (1867-1946), head of WH Smith, owner of the Ashendene Press, and president of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society; he subsequently furnished the house with contemporary furniture (in the Arts and Crafts style) as well as antiques. This charger dates to the period of the purchase of the house and must have been commissioned by or for him. There is a related vase, painted by Louise Powell, in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, (accession number C.134-1938) which was donated by St John Hornby in 1938.
