The Society of the Cincinnati was founded in May of 1783 for commissioned officers who serviced in the Continental Army or Navy during the American Revolution. The Society's founder, Major General Henry Knox (1750-1806) was assisted in its development and promotion by Samuel Shaw (1754-1794), his former aide-de camp. The distinctive badge of membership of the Society was designed by Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant.
Samuel Shaw commissioned porcelain from China decorated with the Society's badge for members. He served as supercargo in 1784 on the "Empress of China," the first Americasn ship to trade directly with China.
Pieces from the Samuel Shaw servivce are found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Peabody- Essex Museum, Salem, Winterthur Museum and the Diplomatic Reception Rooms, Washington, DC.
