Of baluster form, footed base, with stepped and domed lid, pierced thumb-piece, scrolled handle with lapped detail and shield-form terminal, stamped twice with maker's mark, "W Y," to base and under rim near handle; engraved cipher "J.E.N." to body.

The cipher is believed to be that of John (1733-1808) and Elizabeth Davis Nixon (1737-1795), who married in 1765. A well-connected merchant and ardent patriot, Nixon was the first to publicly read The Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia from the steps of the Statehouse on July 8, 1776.
