The 215 foot tall Natural Bridge and surrounding land was purchased by Thomas Jefferson in 1774. In his Notes on the State of Virginia (1785), he called the great arch, "the most sublime of Nature's works,"
By the 19th century the Natural Bridge had became a popular tourist attraction and the subject of numerous engravings and paintings. It was even included in a panel of the French scenic wallpaper, "Les Vues d'Amerique du Nord," by Zuber et Cie in 1834. The Natural Bridge is now part of the Natural Bridge State Park and Natural Bridge, Virginia.
