PROVENANCE:

The incised marks to the underside of this vase indicate it was originally in the renowned porcelain collection assembled by Augustus the Strong (1694-1733), King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, in the Japanese Palace, Dresden, Germany. It is recorded in the inventory book of 1779 in the chapter for White Chinese Porcelain, subchapter for Garnitures, Figures and Various Dolls, as one of six white Marseilles-style rollwagen vases moulded with flowers, each 11½ [Saxon] inches in. high (approx 26.91cm or 10 1/2 modern in.), 4½ [Saxon] in. in diam. (approx. 10.53cm or 4 1/8 modern in.), No. 97. “Rollwagen” refers to the cylindrical form of the vase. “Marseilles”-style refers to the floral relief pattern (possibly relating to printed textiles patterns produced in Marseilles at the time). None of the six examples listed in the 1779 inventory are preserved today in the collection in Dresden.
