Note
Constance Cochrane was born in Pensacola, Florida at the United States Navy Yard. Attending the Philadelphia School of Design she studied under Elliot Daingerfield and Henry B. Snell. After completing her studies she remained in Philadelphia and became an original member of the Philadelphia Ten. These ten female artists exhibited together from 1917 to 1945 with the goal of moving women beyond the role of hobbyists, as they were often viewed, and into acceptance as professional artists. The group eventually grew to thirty artists, many of whom lived progressive and unconventional lifestyles. Many members never married and others who did chose to keep their maiden names or not have children.
