Artist Biography

Ferne Jacobs is an American fiber artist active since the mid-1960s. Born in Chicago to Jewish parents, her heritage informs her artwork, most visibly in the hebrew lettering she applies to some of her linen constructions. She received her M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University in 1976, and was awarded National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships three times (1973-74, 1977-78, and 1990-91). In 1995 Jacobs was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Craft Council, and she received the Flintridge Foundation Award for Visual Artists in 2005. Jacobs' work may be found in many museum collections, including the Smithsonian Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit, MI; and the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, Scotland.
