A Chippendale carved mahogany desk and bookcase Possibly Providence, Rhode Island, late 18th century

With the chalk inscription "Angell ....," to top of desk, the upper section with plain molded cornice, two molded doors revealing top compartments and one shelf, the bottom section with slant front revealing fitted interior, over four graduated drawers, on ogee feet.

H: 85 3/4 in. W: 42 in. D: 22 in.

Note

Similar in form to a desk and bookcase signed by Daniel Spencer (1741-1801), a nephew to John Goddard who worked in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island and Dartmouth, Massachusetts, offered by Levy Galleries (item number 6358). The "Angell" inscription may refer to a member of the early Rhode Island family or Angell street in Providence.
