Este was born in New Jersey and served for many years as an Ohio State Supreme Court Judge from Cincinnati. Joseph Oriel Eaton, a portrait and landscape painter, depicts the Judge before an impressive view of the Ohio River. Eaton was born in Ohio but studied painting in New York City and Indianapolis. He worked in Indianapolis, Cincinnati and New Orleans before moving his studio permanently to New York City from Cincinnati in 1864. He frequently exhibited at the National Academy of Design.
