The elaborate cresting carved in the form of two firehose nozzels spouting water on figure of a phoenix rising from flames, the chair back carved with entwined fire hoses and vines, carved dolphin feet, on casters.

There were a number of Phoenix Fire Hose companies and Phoenix Fire Insurance companies established in the early 19th century in New England and Mid-Atlantic States. One early Phoenix Hose Company was organized in Philadelphia in 1818 and originally shared space with the Niagara Fire Comapany on Zane Street near 7th. The Phoenix Fire Company was organized in 1824 in Easton, Pennsylvania. They introduced the first fire alarm bell to the city in 1858 and the first steam powered fire engine to the region in 1865.
