Tapering sides, molded base and rim, scrolled strap handle, the front engraved, "Presented to Capt. W. Marshall, of the Brig Arab, as a token of respect from his passengers, during a voyage from Bideford to New York May 1842," marked to underside, "Ball Tompkins & Black Successors to Marquand & Co."

The brig Arab was based out of Bideford in north Devon. At 184 tons, the ship was built to transport emigrants from England to the United States and Canada.
