A Chippendale carved walnut chest-on-chest Philadelphia, PA, late 18th century

Upper case with molded top, three over two short drawers, above three graduated long drawers, the lower case with waist molding over three graduated long drawers, molded base on straight bracket feet, bearing brass plaque inscribed "Catherine Wistar Morris (1772-1859)," the interior of one drawer retaining old label inscribed, "Catherine Wistar Morris/ Catherine Morris Brown/ Elizabeth Morris Hacker/ Elizabeth Dawson Hacker."

H: 78 in. W: 41 3/4 in. D: 23 in.

Note

Catherine Wistar Morris was the daughter of Samuel Morris (1734-1812) and Rebecca Wistar (1735-1791). She did not marry. Two of her textile works, a needlework sampler and sewing case, are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (acc. no. 1998-161-18 and 1998-162-27).
