Note
A leading protagonist of Post-War German art, Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) is renowned for his influential and experimental work in painting and photography. Untitled dates from 1990, a time in Polke's oeuvre when he began exploring south-east Asia and Australia, and using materials such as meteor dust, smoke, uranium rays, lavender and a purple pigment excreted by snails.
These experiments produced paintings which reflect on the concepts of originality and authorship which underpin the Modernist tradition and, in particular, the mystique of Abstract Expressionism.
The work of Sigmar Polke can be found in museum collections across the globe including; Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, among others.
