No place, Jan(uar)y 23d 1869. Carte de visite, signed by Andrew Johnson as President, on verso. 4 x 2 1/2 in. (102 x 63 mm). Lot includes a printed ticket, on orange pasteboard, to Johnson's Senate impeachment trial, dated May 2, 1868; lacking stub along left edge.
An incredibly scarce photograph of President Andrew Johnson, signed and dated while serving as 17th President of the United States. Johnson was the first president to be impeached in the House of Representatives, but survived conviction in his Senate trial in May 1868 by one vote. Included is a ticket to that trial, which was open to the public, but only a limited number of daily tickets were available, typically around 60.
