These plates are believed to be part of a service ordered in Canton in 1879 by former President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia, and later passed on to their daughter, Ellen Wrenshall Grant Sartoris. This service may have been commissioned to accompany the Grants' existing 315-piece service, which is of a similar palette but bears the monogram "USG." It was ordered for them by naval officer Daniel Ammen (1819-1898) in 1868 and was delivered to the White House shortly after Grant's inauguration in 1869.
