Model 1850 Field and Staff sword and scabbard, presentation plaque engraved, "Presented to/ Capt. Frank Zentmyer/ Co. 1 5th Regt. P.R.C /from his Company as a testimonial of his worth/ as an Officer & a Gentleman/ April 30th 1862."

Born in Franklin Township, Huntington County, Pennsylvania, Franklin Zentmyer enlisted as a Captain in Company 1, 5th Regiment Pennsylvania Reserves/ 34th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1861. The 5th Regiment was deployed in many of the early skirmishes of the Civil War and saw heavy action in the battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines Mills and Charles City Crossing and Antietam. Zentmyer was promoted to Major on July 2, 1862 and took command of the 5th during the Second Battle of Bull Run. Zentmyer was severely wounded at Fredericksburg, captured and died of his wounds in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia. Zentmyer's brother David, also served in the 5th, and at the time of his death at Fredericksburg, was 1st Lieutenant, Acting adjutant of the Regiment.
